Geestelijke / Emotionele pijn

Emotional and/or mental pain appears to vary, and definitions of it also vary widely.

This includes psychological pain, emotional suffering resulting from stress, loss, and grief, but also powerlessness, loneliness, depression, lack of connection, and inner emptiness (the list is not exhaustive). This is the pain that makes you not want to get out of bed in the morning, makes "normal" functioning seem impossible, and makes you prefer loneliness and isolation. The pain of grief and loss is often confusing: a feeling of numbness, an inability to enjoy what used to bring you joy, or, conversely, a very easy emotional reaction or outburst. In other words, grief has many faces.

On the other hand, psychological pain can be so subtle that you lack insight into the "why" of your sadness, your fear, or your unexpected emotional reactions. This kind of pain often holds your thoughts, feelings, and your ability to direct your actions captive.

Healing creates more space; you're no longer stuck in these feelings. The pain may not be completely gone, but you can talk about it and reflect on it again. Grief takes time, and everyone copes with it in their own way. With a full recovery - when you reach that point - it's as if your pain never existed, as if a heavy cloud has lifted.

Mental suffering can build up for years; feelings are suppressed, denied, or unrecognized. Until the burden becomes so heavy that the body signals: "Enough! Do something about it." It would be wonderful if healing offered an immediate solution, but that's not how it works: what has built up over the years can't simply be removed in one stroke. The path back is taken in small steps, with stones of understanding paving the way.
